Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur: Sweet New Year
Motivational Tools:
Display in the room pictures of bees at various stages of honey gathering. Place on small table various honey jars and flavors of honey, apples, pictures of round challot with raisins.
Lesson Plan: (20 minutes)
1.Have students seated in a half circle, facing the small display table that is to the left or right of the seated teacher. In this way, the student’'s eyes will be focused in one direction, facing the teacher.
2. We are reminded during Rosh Hashanah that is is so important to have a sweet New Year. We eat sweet things, like apples and honey, we say nice things to our family and friends and we wish everyone L’Shana Tova U’mitukah (Have a sweet and good year!)
3. Songs: Tapuchim U’divash l’Rosh Hashana
(Apples and Honey on Rosh Hashanah)
Tapuchim U’divash l’Rosh Hashana (2 times)
Shana Tova, Shana U’mitukah
Tapuchim U’divash l’Rosh Hashana
Dip the Apples in the Honey (tune of Oh My Darling)
Dip the apples in the honey,
Say a bracha loud and clear.
Shanah tova u’mitukah
Have a happy sweet new year.
4. Have a discussion about the process of honey making by using computer generated pictures or store bought . Often students have been presented with this information in the past and already are familiar with bees and the honey process. By using pictures, students are able to lead the discussion and the teacher is simply the facilitator. This process is delightful because students thoroughly enjoy telling what they know!
Culminate the learning by using popsicle sticks and dipping them into honey and tasting it!
Reinforcement activities:
- Create honey bowls
Using small plastic 4oz tumblers, children can transform these into decorative bowls. Precut squares of tissue paper and pour a tablespoon of liquid glue into small bowls. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the glue, to lighten the constancy. Have children use inexpensive small paintbrushes, and cover the plastic tumbler in a small area with glue, place tissue on top of painted glue area, paint over with the brush and glue. Cover cup completely with tissue using various colors of tissue. When dry it will be a mosaic of colors. This method can also be used on small plates, to accompany the honey bowl for the apples. However, glue the tissue on the underside of the clear plate, not on the side for food.
- Cut apples into slices, give each child a slice to dip into honey.
Before eating the apples and honey say the blessing:
Baruch atah adoshem, elokaynu melach haolam borei paree ha atz
